In response to Diana's comment, I am pleased you are a pro-active parent and have open and honest communication with them because next to loving them, I feel that is the most important thing. However, from my experience (I have a child that was molested by a step-brother) I also had "the talk" with my child. In fact, I had it many times over several years. It especially hit home with us because a church leader/up-standing community member was recently found guilty of this very thing. Therefore, I believe that was the topic of discussion in every home in our small town. I know it was because of our open communication that my son felt comfortable and secure in coming to tell me what had happened to him. But the reality is- you probably won't know until it's too late. Because of parents like me & you who have talked to our children, our kids will know it is wrong, but I really don't feel most of them will be able to stop it before/while it's happening. Just like with a sexual predator, "you won't know what you know until you know" (quoted by my son't therapist). Since there is no profile we can use to predict who is or will become a child molester, it's only something we can look back on and see the red-flags. This is why it's always someone you wouldn't suspect, someone you had trusted. Of course we wouldn't trust the drug-dealer down the street with our kids, but ironically, that's not who is molesting our children- it's the uncle, the grandfather etc. that we invite into our home on a weekly basis, that volunteers to take our children with them to the movies, that we wouldn't suspect in a million years. Because we are good parents and that's who we trust with our kids, and if we didn't, they wouldn't be around our kids, right? So this is where the nightmare lies - even though our kids will know it's wrong, they will be around someone who will do this to them...they will trust this person and their parents will trust this person. Sooner or later, the opportunity will come and I don't believe most children have the ability to stop it in that very moment. So what do we do? I really don't have the answer. Maybe when we are having "the talk" with our children, we should focus on how to stop the abuse while it is happening just as much as we focus on what inappropriate touching is and how it is wrong, etc. because I know that is not something I really discussed with my child. Just like self-defense classes for women, perhaps we should be teaching our children ways to get out of those situations. Tactics, if you will. Let's teach our children that if they do start feeling uncomfortable or worse then start faking being sick, tell the person you have to go to the bathroom (and grab the phone on their way), find a reason to go outside and go to a neighbors house. (My son actually did go into the bathroom, but wasn't able to stay in there until I got home). Yes, they need to know it's wrong and I can sleep at night knowing I taught my child what I was supposed to and I know it was because of our conversations he came to me. However, what wakes me up at night is the fact that I didn't give him any tools to get out of the situation, to stop it from happening. I am no expert and I don't know if this is the answer, but too many of our children are being victimized in this way. There has to be something more we can do.

My cousins son has autism and she did her best to convince me not to vaccinate my son. I sat down with my pediatrician to discuss my issues. She provided me with books and published medical journals about the vaccines and how it is not linked to autism. It is very easy to associate the two. When your child begins to receive their vaccines it is at the same time they are developing and growing. Their first year of life they learn to laugh, some walk, talk, etc. It all happens during the same time they are getting their vaccines. If your child has the autistic trait, they will become autistic regardless of what you do. You cant prevent it. But u can prevent measles, hepatitis, small pox, polio, etc. You put your child more at risk without it.

Thank you so much for sharing your story Flora. From what I've read, most parents of autistic children say the same thing, that their child became ill after the shots. It is such a difficult decision because I've also read of children dieing from diseases such as the chicken pox and measles as a result of not getting vaccinated.
