Nancy Arroyo Ruffin is a New York City born and bred Puertoriqueña. Raised on the rough streets of Brooklyn during the 80’s by parents who taught her that the most important thing in life is love for yourself, your family, your community and obtaining an education.
From a very young age Nancy used her surroundings and everyday experiences as her literary canvas. At age 16 she penned her first poem dedicated to her 15 year old cousin when he was murdered on the streets of Brooklyn as a result of gun violence. Since then Nancy has used the written word to address personal, social, cultural, and economic issues.
As a writer, poet, and spoken word performer Nancy is breaking down barriers one stone at a time. She does it all with her voice and determination to inspire, build, create, educate, nurture, support and empower all who cross her path. She describes herself “as a strong American Puertoriqueña who believes that the only limits that exist are those that we impose on ourselves. Anything we set our minds to is possible.”
Nancy is a graduate of Bernard Baruch College where she earned a B.A. in Accounting and an MBA in Healthcare Management. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Nancy’s work has been published in the on-line magazines Sofrito for Your Soul, The Daily Voice, and The Brooklyn Rail as well as in ChamacaArts.com. Her work will also be appearing in the upcoming anthology “Joy Interrupted: An Anthology about Motherhood and Loss” published by Fat Daddy Farm Press in early 2012.
Nancy is a member of the New York City Latina’s Writers Group and is also a Cave Canem workshop alum. She has performed at various venues throughout NYC including but not limited to Capicu Poetry and Cultural Showcase, Babble in the Bronx, The CreativeINK Poetry Series, La Loba Poetry Series, the Lolita Bar, as a feature at El Museo del Barrio’s Speak Up poetry event and on April 12th, 2013 will be feauturing at legendary The Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
